CHICAGO COURTS-EXERCISE IN
FUTILITY a
It is now crystal clear to the masses of
the people at home and abroad that the Uni-
ted States is a downright fascist country. This
has been exemplified with the commence-
ment of the trial of the so-called ‘Conspiracy
8' on September 24th in Chicago.
The fascist judge, ‘Adolph’ Julius J.
Hoffman has promised that this will be the
trial of the decade. It is obvious that this is
the last stage and the turning point in Amer-
ican history when the iron hand of the dicta-
torship will be displayed.
This mock trial would not be possible
without the inclusion of the Black Panther
Party. The fascist Gestapo pigs have rail-
roaded our Chairman on another trumped-up
charge. Having kidnapped him from San
Francisco these lunatics took him by car to
Chicago 12 days prior to the trial. They had
him sleeping in various county jails through-
out the journey. Jails not fit for any form
of habitation. The result is that Chairman
Bobby Seale arrived in Chicago sick from the
rot and mess of the jails to face the SS and
the Gestapo army.
These fascist madmen have refused to
to allow him to see a doctor and it is obvi-

It would be deviating not to keep to
the pattern set, Charles R. Garry, Chairman
Bobby Seale’s attorney, has requested a post-
ponement of the trial as he is due to go into
the hospital for an operation and is unable
to be present in Chicago. ‘Adolph Hitler’
Hoffman has of course refused the request
and Chairman Bobby Seale faces the fascists
without an attorney
The judge has gone through the process
of a dictatorial jury selection in which ab-
surd questions like ‘Does your daughter wear
a bra?’ were the qualifications necessary to
sit on the jury. Relevant facts like — are
these people true representatives of the peer
group of the defendants — were thrown out
as being immaterial and irrelevant.
This is a warning for us to intensify the
struggle, to heighten our awareness, to come
together as it is clear that this mockery of a
system will not deem any justice and that
the time is imminent for us to move from
all directions.
It is also the time for us to understand
that the education of the masses must be in-
tensified. The action on the part of the mo-
murderous pigs in a demonstration outside —
the courthouse shows that their level of a-
wareness must be moved from a lower level
to a higher level.
The intentions of the power structure
in relation to the Black Panther Party has
been obvious for some time. The annihila-
tion of the Party and the murder of all its
leaders. However we should understand that
the Black Panther Party manifests an idea
and the idea must live on as long as there is
oppression,
When the oppressor launches a vicious
attack against freedom fighters because of
the way they choose to go about their lib-
eration then they know they are moving in
the right direction
They have been unable to defeat, ham-
per or dull the revolutionary spirit of Chair-
man Bobby Seale. We should learn from his
example and fight for his freedom, Huey's
freedom, the freedom of all political prison-
ers and an end to the massive repression.

This was the theme of the court pro-
ceedings of the Conspiracy Eight. From the
hand picked jury (eight middle aged, white
suburbanites, two house negroes, and two big
businessmen-~all registered voters) to the con-
stant denial by Julius ‘Adolph Eichman’ Hoff-
man of all the defense motions.
Before the selection of the racist, Nazi-
ridden jury was made, they were allowed to
read newspapers in the ceremonial courtroom.
Later, Hoffman, pig Nixon's chief fund raiser
and right hand lackey in Illinois, told the
prospective jurors not to read newspapers,
listen to TV, or talk with each other.
The special category of jurors, all regis-
tered voters, were in contradiction to the
political morales of the defendants. The de-
fendants, demonstrators against the bourgeois
political process, and a socialist revolution-
ary, an advocate of the people's dictator-
ship {proletarian democracy) are going to be
tried by people who support and particiy ate
in that same bourgeois political process. This
unrepresentative, illegal and unconstitutional
jury is illustrative of the court proceedings
here in fascist America. THE BLACK PAN-
THER PARTY demands that all defendants
be tried in a court by a jury of their peer
group and not lilly-white suburbanites, right-
wingers, black lackies, and capitalist business.

our municipal courts in action, we
asked a court employee for a short
description of an interesting day in the
court. The following events took place
on October 28, 1968.
Magistrate James L. Oakey, sitting
at the Juvenile Court of Cook County,
Illinois, came back from lunch stone
drunk. That afternoon he was so
the fascist tee-totaler warned him to watch
the language that he uses (not to talk of ob
jective reality).
It will be impossible for a true revolu
tionary, Chairman Bobby, to get a fair trial
from a bourgeois reactionary. This fascist
bourgeois state (Babylon) is using the courts
to fall the revolutionary machine. But it
won't work, the Vanguard Party, the motive
force of the revolutionary movement, has al-
ready began to motivate, mobilize and ener-
gize the once sleeping masses. The trial of
Chairman Bobby shows the people that unless
they are in power to contro! all legislative
and judicial processes (proletarian demo
cracy), their leaders will be railroaded and
the Vanquard will be slowed down

graphs, pictures or tapes can be made by the
defendants to express their view of the legal

mechanical monsters (U.S. Marshalls). ‘A-
dolph’ has said that he isn’t there to satisfy
public interest but will ‘run the court as I see
fit.’ (A bourgeois reactionary and fascist op-
pressor can only give a bourgeois reactionary
verdict and run a trial in the manner of Nazi
fascists.)

When the last case had been heard
and the court room cleared, Judge
Oakey propositioned Mrs, Joan Bye,
a probation officer. She turned the
old goat down. Judge Oakey wouldn't
turn to New York to fight for their freedom.
The only reason he can give for locking the
attorneys up is Chairman Bobby’s insistance
upon having Charles Garry as his counsel.
This is blackmail, piracy, genuine and una-
dorned.
One must understand the significance
of the courts here in Babylon. There aren't
too many more pigs they can hire, or too
many more laws that they can pass; but the
fascist power structure can call grand jury
hearings and issue indictments forever. They
are using the court system to frustrate the
revolutionary struggle and imprison the man-
power needed to carry the revolution
through to the end.
Pig Nixon, Hoffman, and Hoover, we
have uncovered your ‘conspiracy’ against the
people. The people of the whole world see
through your fascist lies and your kangaroo
court. You smell of pig manure and your
true nature is evident to all who see you wal-
low in the mire. Keep your hands off Bobby
mother-—--. Keep your hands off the people.
You are on the verge of extinction. The peo-
ple are waiting for the opportune time to
hang you for your astronomical crimes. You
and all reactionaries are doomed. Give up
‘Adolph’ Hoffman, we are ‘too revolutionary

fascist tactics used against him and
another Panther on February 20,

of this rally was to commemorate
Malcom X's birthday and to help
organize the Black Students’ Union
there, The Dean of Boys, as the pigs
wish to be called, (Pig Murphy, now
the center of the racial battles at

brothers that they could not use
the auditorium in which this rally
was to be hold

24-28, I had a jury trial to de-
termine whether or notl was guilty
of breaking the law of the Boardof
Education, Except for a Chinese
who could hardly speak English,
I had an all-white jury which found
me guilty of serving the people,
It only took them four days to try
the case and 2 hours to come back
with a verdict of guilty,
This is Just another clear oxam-
ple of fascist courts not designed
for the Justice of the people, but to
defy the people and use the lies
of ‘‘In God we trust’’ to railroad
brothers into fall who try to serve
the people. John Brown was one of
our teachers during Liberation
School this summer. He Is now the
Assistant Coordinator of San Fran-
cisro’s Free Breakfast for School
Children Program to help feed the
hungry children of the community

ment about the jury, an all-white
jury, not knowing or being able to
understand the average reasoning

At one time this Judas jack-In-
ape, Wilbur Thomas, was trying to
worm his way into the Black
Panther Party, Brooklyn Branch.
He reached the honored position
of Panther-in-Training. However,
his social practice indicated that
something was shakey, the nigger
vascillated too much, so his status
as a Panther--in--Training was
terminated, He was told his prac-
tice was not up to par to qualify
as a Panther-in-Training and that
if he wanted to maintain a re-
lationship with the Black Panther
Party tt could only be as a friend
of the Panthers, During his brief
association with the Party he ob-
viously scoped around, Due to the
fact the purge in New York was
just gotting underway he scopedon
* some fools who at best could only
qualify for the stupid revolution,
namely Alfred Cain, Ricardo De-
Leon and Jerome West. Alfred
Cain and Jerome West supposedly
had “‘personal'’ problems and re-
quested a leave of absence and
became inactive. Ricardo DeLeon
had to stop relating to Panther
offices because somebody was
- bringing smoke on his a-s from
some problem he had before he

trying to hide, Sometime around
the first part of August, these
candidates for the stupidrevolution
got their heads together along with
that fugitive from the ‘‘mod squad"’
Wilbur Thomas, During the inves-
tigation I was unable to discover
who Initiated the idea but the
events bear out the fact that run-
ning dog, beotlicking Wilbur
Thomas was In complete control
at the time the trap was sprung.
On August 16th, blasting on all
the newscasts was, four ‘Black
Panthers'' from Brooklyn were
arrested as they came off the
West Side Highway. According to
news reports, Alfred Cain,
Ricardo DeLeon and Jerome West
were charged with conspiracy to
commit robbery and possession of
dangerous weapons. Wilbur
Thomas, according tonews reports
had been turned over to federal
authorities for some vague unex-
plained reason, As time went on
all mention of Pig-Agent-Provaca-
ture Wilbur Thomas was dropped,
The other three, now fully in-
itiated members of the stupid rev-
olution and automatically expelled
from any association with the Black
Panther Party, are sitting in jail
with $50,000 bail each, The next
week Wilbur Thomas was seen
walking the streets.
I got his address 755 Fenimore
St., Brooklyn, N.Y, from infor-
mation he had given when he came
to the Party. Typical of a stupid
and arrogant pig, he gave his real
address, At least when I staked
out the address | saw him going
in and out of 755 Fenimore, It
truns out the pigs found plans
that had been drawn up for the
job in the car, Guess who drew
up the plans? Right on! Pig
Thomas, Guess who was driving
the car and guess who got the
car for them to go pull the job
in? Right on. Pig Thomas guilty
on both counts, The thing to top
all of this madness off is the
fact that all three of those high
ranking members of the stupid
revolution say they suspected Wil-
bur (I Spy) Thomas of belng a
pig all along.

was there waiting on them, al-
ready having been notified by pig

David Conyers, the coordinator for

charged with supplying a plece

same day David Conyers along
with the three musketeers, Alfred
Cain, Ricardo DeLeon and Jerome
West were Indicted for conspiracy
to commit murder, It seems as
if some pig remembered that when
they vamped on Alfred Cain he
pointed a sawed off shotgun at

jerked the gun away before he

Barbara Herring had to be a vic-

hospital crippled but she is strong
because she realizes that her loss

But Saturday, September 6, 1969
at Park Hill Shopping Center, a
young Black man met fate face to
face as a long butcherknife ripped
at his flesh and sucked away his
life: (Richmond Higgs, a 19 year
old brother loved and respected by
many here in Denver). His partner,
a brother named Lewis tried to
help Richmond and wound up in
critical condition by the same
knife. There were reports that the
pigs sitting on the opposite side
of the shopping center laughed as
this matinee of horror was in
progress. When itwasall over they
came and busted Robert Taylor.
Panthers tried to stop the bleed-
ing of Higgs as he lay dying, but
pigs did not let them continue, They
let Higgs lay there for at least
a half hour. This particular in-
cident left one brother dead, one
critically wounded and one in jail,
The three things that these
brothers had in common was that
they were all young, Black, and
high off barbituates (Red Devils
and Yellow Jackets),
The major factor that must be
understood is that if Richmond
Higgs wouldn't have been under
the influence of this drug, he might
“have atleast had afighting chance,
By allowing one’s mind to become
stagnant confused and often dis-
torted we are falling victims tothe

The Free Breakfast for Children
is just one of the programs being
carried out by the Black Panther

food, they direct traffic to see
that the children cross the streets

Children Program? The answers
to this question need be answered
for only those who belong to the
upper or so-called middle class.

tlated breakfast at Sacred Heart
was one of four such centers
operated by the Party in San Fran-
cisco, serving nearly 300 children
throughout the city daily, While the
federal government investigated
hunger and local government
counted hunger, the Black Panther
Party satisfied the hunger of small
children who otherwise might have
gone to school without breakfast
and who perhaps would have had
no lunch.
Shortly after the Sacred Heart
Breakfast Program was launched,
the Public
Swept into the Parish Hall where
meals were being served to inspect
the facilities and to insure com-
pPliance with public health laws,
Since the days of the San Fran-
cisco fire and earthquake, lunches
and dinners have been served in
that hall to Irish and Italian
Catholics in the community, Un-
told gallons of spaghetti and pounds
of corned beef have passed through
that kitchen, onto the plates of
Sacred Heart's parishoners and
never before had the Public Health
Department poked into the refri-
gerator, checked the stove, or
tested the heat of the dishwater,
Suddenly, Panther breakfasts were
a threat to health. And one might
wonder whose health was endan-
gered by scrambled eggs, sausage,
toast, honey, grits, and hot
chocolate -- the small children
streaming im and out from 7 to
6:30 a.m. each morning, or the
public official lost behind his desk
somewhere, who knows that San
Francisco city schools can and
should be feeding youngsters in
need of food. Public health laws
somehow get stronger enforcement
than federal and state laws
empowering city schools systems
to offer breakfast and lunch to
children, They somehow merit
more compliance than gambling
legislation which would restrict
church bingo games and lucrative
raffles,
Staffed by volunteers from the
Party and from the community,
the breakfast depended in large
measure on financial support from
interested people and organi-
zations, and donations from local
businesses, Approximately! Ovolun-
teers arrived each morning at
6 a.m. to prepare breakfast and
worked until 9:30 a.m., cooking,
serving Supervising,and cleaning,
During the months of its operation,
breakfast was always served and
the volunteer help was always
there,
Not quite so reliable was the
flow of donations from business
People. More often than not, Party

businesses which make their for-
tune on people who are trapped
in theWesternAddition and who have
nowhere else to shop, These same
businesses would rather destroy
in this community, not to investi-
gate or to study or to survey, but
to act, One of the most signifi-
cant aspects of the breakfast pro-
gram was its success in uniting
young people in this area to solve
the problems of thelr own com-
munity, under their own direc-
tion, This church chooses to re-
main free to cooperate in that
kind of effort, even when this means
‘freedom’ from the approval of

surplus food than contribute It to
the breakfast program,
The Black Panther Party*sini-
tiated breakfast was a sincere and
quite successful attempt to satis-
fy a need of the entire community.
Hunger knows no color and all
children, White and Black, were
served by the “program, Again,
the Party proved that it Is not
a racist organization, but in the
vanguard, serving the needs and
desires of the people, Hungry chil-
dren indicate an obvious need of
the people.
The increased pressure place!
on Sacred Heart Church by author-
ities these last few months is the
result of our involvement with the
Panthers and the breakfast pro-
gram, among other things. Despite
the possibility of increased repres-
sion and perhaps retaliation, those
of us at Sacred Heart have no
intention of withdrawing our sup-
port from programs that genuinely
serve the community, Nor can we
in conscience remain silent about
the failure of established author-
ity to meet the needs of our peo-
ple, or even to honestly listen
and to admit the existence of those
needs. Willingly we join with the
Panthers and other organizations
authorities, ‘‘freedom'' from
accoptability by the establishment,
freedom" from financial support.
The Black Panther Party Is
repeatedly the object of attack by
those who demand a “law and
order’’ society, who complain in
the press about the lawlessness of
the ghetto, and who plead for law
enforcement, by physical force
when this Is necessary. Perhaps
this Is the time to point out that
without funds or any of the support
available to public agencies, the
Panthers are obeying anolder law,
one’ as ancient as Christianity,
which urges compassionate manto
feed the hungry and to open his
ears, his resources, his heart, to
the needy around him, It is time
to point out that it is the Panthers
who have small children, Black and
White, sitting down to eat a meal
together, In peace, It has been the
Panthers with their breakfast
operation who have found a way to
direct the energies of young peo-
ple to the service of their com-
munity in organizing such an under-
taking.
All of this happened at Sacred
Heart. It is good to find so much
Christianity in a Church,

Jamaica, Long Island raid
Tonight (Tuesday night, Sept,
30th) New York pigs shot-up,
gassed and bombarded, the home
of members of the Jamaica, Long
Island branch of the Black Pan-
ther Party,
Pigs came tothe Panther pad in
Jamaica, Long Island, armed to
the teeth and demanded to be let
in, It is not known how many
people were in the house at this
time but it Is known that the bro-
thers shouted out to the Fascist
pigs, ‘Do you have a search war-
rant?’ To this sensible and legal
question the pigs replied ‘We
don’t need one’’ and began tokick
down the door, Current informa-
tion Indicates that at least two
FasCist pigs were shot in the
battle that followed and at least
two Panthers were arrested.
Reports from the community
indicate that the pigs came well
equipped and carried themselves
in the manner of a ‘‘Search and
Destroy’ operation. The stan-
dard equipment for tonights op-
eration was bullet proof vests,
45 Caliber grease guns, M-79
grenade launchers, and the usual
CS-tear gas, and shotguns,
Due to the fact that New York's
finest were so Ull-equipped for
this daring venture they found it
necessary to beat the two hand-
cuffed Panthers (17-year old
Stanley Pittiford and 17-year old
Joseph Baskerville) with the butts
of their weapons to make sure that
the Panthers didn't attack the
handcuffs with their teeth. One of
the brothers was still uncon-
scious when he was finally placed
in a pig car and hauled away,
Ambulances called to the scene
were busy, but other than the
wounded pigs, it is notknownwho
was treated,
At the end of August the Black
Panther Party revealed a plan by
the Berkeley Pig Department to
conduct a ‘Search and Destroy
Mission’’ on our National Head-
quarters office, The plan was
authentic and duly recognized as
such by the Berkeley Pig De-
partment, Pig departments a-
Cross racist AmeriKKKa are
fairly uniform in their attitudes
towards minorities, the poor, and
political dissenters; and Ber-
keley like New York has a ‘‘mo-
del Pig Department.’ Chicago,
Philly, Los Angeles, New Haven,

mis-named ‘Justice Depart-
ment’' and is coordinated by a

THE OAKLAND FIASCO
This past month has witnessed
some very strange events in the
Fascist courts of the San Fran-
cisco bay area,
Warren Wells was convicted on
charges of attempted murder
after two trials that ended in
10-2 and Il-! for acquittal, War-
ren was sentenced to five to life.
In Alameda County Courthouse,
Panther Charles Bursey was rail-
roaded for five years to life on the
Same charge that grew out of the
same incident. (The April 6, Pig
Attack that resulted in the death of
Bobby Hutton, the wounding of
Eldridge Cleaver, and the rail-
roading of many Panthers.) These
facts would Indicate that although
Alameda County courts are short
on justice, they are consistent,
The inconsistency ts that two of
Oakland's Rookie punk pigs, while
in a drunken and psychotic state,
shot-up our National office, which
was in Oakland at that time. There

On Sept. 2, 1969 the Welfare
Rights Organization staged a pro-
test demonstration at the Hudson
County Welfare Office demanding
their checks (which many had not
received) and an additional $50.00
per child to purchase school
clothing and supplies. They also
confronted the Board of Education
demanding that free school lunches
based on the 1964 School Act be
started for all the children,
Mothers were inside and outside
of this racist institution with pigs
olnking all around. At about
3:45 p.m., a pig came out of patrol
car #20 and had the nerve to send
the hot dog man away so that the
mothers and their children could
not obtain food. This racist, fas-
cist dog showed his utter contempt
for those present by his uncalled
for actions,
The lying politicians spend bil-
lions of dollars to send someone
to the moon but when it comes to
the basic needs of the people,
namely, food, clothing and
sShelter,..These greedy pigs could
care less, Things are now to the
point where in order for most wel-
fare reciplents to send thelr
children to school without the
children being branded, it isneces-
Sary that they receive the addi-
tional money needed. The Jersey
city winters are long and clod,

come ill, Because the Welfare
Department, Board of Education
and US Government has and ts

for School Children Campaign, in
answer to the inhuman welfare

other oppressed communities in
which these bandits operate must
return some ofthe profits they take
from our communities by obtaining

The home of Mr, and Mrs, Bible
at 706 34th Avenue was invaded
by the fascist pig department on
Monday, September 15, without
cause or provocation. The pigs
said they had received a report
that some young kids were break-

people in particular and all
oppressed people, regardless of
race or origin, But it serves to
point out clearly the blanket power

of respect and justice that is held
for the Black, the opppressed, and

MRS. BIBLE AND HER CHILDREN
After successfully destroying
the door, the beast entered and
proceeded to beat the mother, Mrs.
Bible with their clubs. Then they
moved over to the living room sofa
where Norma Jean Bible was laying
down sick, and dragged the sister
by her neck, pulling her out of
the house. Norma Jean was then
arrested for resisting arrést in
her own home. Also three of her
brothers were arrested for suspli-
cion of burglary.
The pleading of the mother for
the safety of her family and home
was ignored by the fascist pigs,
as were the Bible family's
basic right as human beings. This

MINISTER OF DEFENSE

This was the 27-year-old black man who had
echoed Red China’s Mao Tse-tung In proclaiming:
“Power grows out of the barrel of a gun.”
_ It was Huey P. Newton who had also declared
that; “The racist dog policemen must withdraw
a mediately from our communities, cease their
‘wanton murder and brutality and torture of black
opie, or face the wrath of the armed people.”’
And it is also, no doubt, Huey P. Newton
who has in turn gained the wrath of policemen
nore than any other living black man
fn fact, his supporters say, that's why he
‘tangled with two Oakland patrolmen in October
‘1967 and came away with gunshot wounds in
“his stomach.
The shootout ended with one policeman
uinded and the other dead. For his part, Huey
now serving a 2to 5-year term for man-

Prison does strange things to men. It hardens
‘and ages some and breaks the spirits of others.
But Newton seems to have survived nearly two
‘years of imprisonment with his spirits intact,
_ just as committed as ever to the alms of the
Black Panther Party.
Although he’s been confined to his tiny cell
21 hours a day since his arrival at the ‘colony’
last fall, although he claims he has been sub-
jected to petty harassments, he has put on weight
af and looks younger than he is.
Le _ As a matter of fact, he’s rather pleasant
“in both manner and appearance. [f Newton is
one of the “bitter young black militants” that
_ we hear so much about, this didn't come through
during our discussion.
st His words — often spiked with humor and
were softly spoken and notably thoughtful.
His responses seemed more intellectual-scholarly
than emotional.
Huey raps:
“In order to have a truly mass movement
With revolutionary causes, \t must have solidarity
} among all ethnic groups. You have to understand
that this is a class struggle, The ruling class
i interested only in perpetuating itself al the
expense of the poor people of the world.”
_ He was explaining the coalition between the
Panthers and white radical groups such as the
Peace and Freedom Party. (Some black militants
have been critical of the Panthers for this.
Among them, Stokely Carmichael, who left the
Movement to migrate to West Africa.)

Asked whether he believes black people should
participate in electoral politics, Huey replied:
“I believe that black people should continue to
get involved in electoral politics; that they should
register and vote in all elections — and even
run for office.
“I don’t think it’s going to do any good. But
it will educate them. It will help to strip the
veil away." He said that once “the veil’ has
been stripped away, black people will be able
{o see what's happening to them.
What does he think of the prospect of
Democratic Assemblyman Jesse Unruh and San
Francisco Mayor Joseph Alioto running against
Ronald Reagan for governor,
He laughed and said he wouldn't back any
of them, adding, “I believe Reagan will be
reelected no matter who runs against him.”
When the average person, conservative or
liberal, black or white, thinks of Huey P. Newton,
he thinks of those protest posters that picture
Huey defermined-looking, decked out in a black
beret and leather jacket, a sawed-off rot gun
gripped firmly in his hands
The man who chatted with me — a man
with the nervous habit of tapping his right cheek
with his right index finger at times while talking
— showed very little resemblance to the images
on those posters
The natural hair-do was gone. His hair is
now closely cropped in a style similar to the
quo vadis popularized by neat, middle-class
leaning black men before the natural came on
the scene.
During a tour of the institution later, I noticed
that many of the young black “residents” wore
their hair in naturals, although not grown too
long.
Of course, they aren't waging a protest as
Huey is doing, a protest that has cost him all
his privileges. '
Among the privileges not taken from him
are those to write and receive mail and to have
visitors.
I had arrived at the prison shortly after the
inmates had finished lunch. After spending about
20 minutes waiting for Huey to be brought out
to the visiting facilities, I was finally told by
the sergeant in charge: “Mr, Newton is here
for your interview."
I looked over the counter and beyond the
sergeant and saw a rather unimposing looking
young man watching us through the stecl-slatted
windows that separated the visiting hall from
our area.
I had been listening to Associate Supt. R
L. Russell come on about the merits of the in-
Stitution, just as if he was its one-man Chamber
of Commerce, Therefore, { hadn't seen Huey
enter the visiting hall. Later Russell gave me
a tour of the institution, a tour jasting more
than an hour.
I followed the sergeant around and was let
in a door to the hall. Huey, smiling, stepped
forward to greet me. We had a hearty handshake
Newton asked whether I preferred to sit in
the visiting hall or in the courtyard.
“It doesn't matter,” I said. “Which ever you
would rather do? But I suppose you would feel
better outside. I guess you don't get out too
much,”
He laughed. “They keep me locked up most
of the time, I think that would be best.’ He
went and rapped on the window and asked the
sergeant if it would be all right. The sergeant
‘came around and assured us that it was, I
noticed that he and Huey seemed to go through
this thing of being very, very polite to each
other — too polite. It was almost like a game
they played.
Once, while we were taking a break to get
some cigarettes and soft drinks, the sergeant
entered and told Hucy that chicken dinners would
be available for “residents” and their visitors
— instead of the box lunches that had normally
been sold.
Huey listened intently, Uianked lim, and told
him how great this would be
“You ste that.” Huey said later, “He's just
putting on a front because you're here, They
don't normally talk to me. We very seldom curry
on a conversation unless we lave to. Bul they re
real nice when T have visitors *

T had asked, rather dumbly. in an effort to get
the conversation under way: “llow're they

been: “How's it going’ And he replied: “O.K.

“Not too bad. I'm locked up 21 hours a day
They let me out of my house three times a day 7
to eat. You see, I'm protesting. I refuse to work. :
“I'm protesting against the cheap wages they
pay the inmates for working here. I’m tr
that es get paid minimum wages for the

He said the inmates are paid six to'ren cents
an hour for working In the various industries.
Some do get 15 cents, he said. ‘It really amounts
to slavery.”
“They should turn it (prison industries) over
to private enterprise and let the men earn
respectable wages.”
The institution operates a dry cleaning plant,
jJaundry, auto repair shop and bakery among
its industries. It does the laundry for Camarillo :
State Hospital, This money could be paid lo -—*
inmate laundry workers, Huey contends. 7
“They harass me some;"" Huey claime,
"Nothing you can really put your finger on. Never
anything big. Just a procession of minor
harassments. But never anything that you can
really point to as being harassment.
“They do things like steal my hair cream,
deodorant, toothpaste — a lot of little things.
When I first come here they use to raid my
house every time I'd leave. They would go
through my things; I could tell." y
He said he got in the habit of taking such
items with him when he left his cell.
He said the pressure eased after he mentioned
it to some reporters, who included it in their
stories. :
“The way I noticed it was that one day I
forgot and didn't take something with me, and
when I returned to my house it was still there,
I could tell that they had been in there trying
to find something (contraband), but they hadn't
bothered it. So I decided to test them. Each
day I would leave something else, and when
T returned it was still there." <
We continued to laugh about the situation
as he told it.
“They do other little things. Like, I can't
have books. They took all of my privileges. Until
Garry (his attorney) got it straightened out, they —
refused to allow me to have any books at all,
Last week he fixed it so that I can now have
books that relate to my case.”
He hadn't started getting the books at the
time of the interview. He is allowed to subscribe e .
to a newspaper, but not to listen to radio, Other ’
inmates keep him informed on radio and
television news broadcasts. That's how he learned -
of Black Panther Chairman Bobby Seale being _—
arrested. The next morning, an inmate broke a
the news to him, .
He said other black inmates are warned to
“stay away from me because I'm a Communist
and racist. If a guy is caught talking to me
they get on him, They've even accused me of
having bodyguards here — of forming Black
Panthers here." Again he laughs.
The subject moves to the Panthers and the
killings of Panthers in Los Angeles and San
Diego. A black cultural nationalist group called _
US, organized in Watts and headed by Ron :
Karenga, is accused of the killings. Recently
three US members were convicted in the L.A.
deaths of two Panther leaders, and were sen-
tenced to life in prison, Last month a Panther
was gunned down as he sold the party's
newspaper on a San Diego street.
“Ron Karenga and his organization see their”
existence belng threatened by the Panther.
Before the Panther came on the scene, Karenga
was real big around Watts and the Los Angeles
area — had everything uptight. He was suppose
to be able to keep the lid on.
“Karenga was paid $50,000 to keep Watts quiet
when King was killed. They've had access to
ull kinds of federal funds, receiving antipoverty
money and so forth.
“Everyone looked up to them, Then, the
Panther came on the scene and the community
started digging what he (the Panther) was doing.
Karenga's organization was dying out — it’s
almost dead, They're fighting to keep alive.” p
His voice dropped a pitch and a distant look
came into his eyes, the same look that was to 4
appear when he told me that Bobby Hutton was =>
the first Panther to be killed. (Hutton was shot
by Oakland police Jast year.)
‘Every chance they get they kill a Panther,”
Karenga's aim js the same as that of police
natonally, to destroy the Panthers or drive them ~
underground, Newton claims,

They told me that the Koreans were
communists and that they were
coming over to our country to take

that’s the North and the South fight-
ing, and they're coming over
here?’ He said, ‘‘Boy, can't you
see we got to stop that shit right
where it is. So you are going over
there, so your mother and father
and your sisters and brothers can
be free; so they can have the right to
do what they want; so they can say
what they want to say; so they can go
where they want to go. And when you
come back home, you'll be aman,
And you'll be able to get youa good

and another on a cane, and the
other with one leg, all of us were

ribbons and 2 1/2 pounds of bat-
tle stars. We ordered these malts
and the bill came to 90 cents, So,
Leroy gave the racist clerk $1.00,
Do you know before she would pick
it up, this racist, fascist pig wiped
the money off and gave us our
change on a napkin. Now this was
one of the people whom I had been
fighting for, so she could havea
good job and be free,
Well, I finally got out. Then I
tried to get a Job. Brothers, let me
tell you I couldn't find one, After
my 26-26 ran out (that's $26.00 for
26 weeks), | was in the same shape
I was in when I first left home, I
was oppressed, I had been put in the
biggest trick of my life, I had fought
for freedom, for employment and
equality, But in turn, I received

the name of Brother John Brown
was added to the list of thousands
of brothers who have been made
victims of the white oppression in
the U.S Army,
Brother Brown was assigned to
the special processing detachment
at Fort Dix to await charges of

Dix, Brother Brown and some of
his fellow captives began to or-

out of his office and gave him
the keys to his car asking, ‘‘Do
me a favor and look in my car
and bring me my check book,’
Brother Brown was gone about 4
minutes, he returned and told Capt,
Hunter that he did not see any
check book, Hunter then said, ‘of
course, it isn't there, because you
Stole it, boy!"'
Private Brown then made a sug-
gestion as to where Capt. Hunter
could put his check book and the
entire pig army. As a result of
the suggestion Pvt, Brown was re-
moved first to a cage in SPD
and then to the post stockade on

MULDRAUGH, Ky. --- A major
battle is developing in this Little
Kentucky town between local of-
ficials and anti-war soldiers from
nearby Ft, Knox, who want to open
a coffeehouse.
Staff and G.L's of the cofféee-
house charge that the local of-
focials are acting in collusion
with Army officials. Army spokes-
men have said nothing publicly,
except to make a brief statement
denying the charge.
Meantime, local police tried to
close the coffeehouse although it
had not yet offically opened for
business, saying it did not have
the proper permits tooperate, The
owner of the building sought an
eviction order from a local court,
and the Muldraugh City Council
passed a new ordinance on Sep-
tember 2 requiring a ‘‘thorough
investigation'' by the Police De-
partment of any person applying to
open a business. This the staff
and GI's see as a blatant attempt
to prevent their opening.
A hearing on the eviction pro-
ceeding is set for September 24
in Meade County Quarterly Court
in Brandenburg, Ky, The landlord
who owns the building where the
coffeehouse is located, a former
meat market on the main street
of Muldraugh, claims the rent has
not been paid, Coffeehouse spon-
sors state they have offered pay-
ment both in person and by certi-
fied matl.
Coffeehouse staff also say they
are preparing a Federal Court
suit charging the ‘‘generals and
local officials’' with conspiracy to
deny civil rights to G.l's, They
say that in addition to closing the
coffeehouse local police have
‘threatened to force their way Into
the building through a private en-
trance, even over the objection of
the people who live upstairs.,.and
have taken names of people in-
side."’ Local officials have also,
the staff claims, used every means
to delay the issuance of permits,
A statement written by an anon-
ymous GI, and Issued through
FTA, an underground paper, says
G.\.'s ralsed the money for the
coffeehouse, ‘found a place, and
fixed {t up’’, Some of them traveled
around the 'country to recruit
civilian staf,
These developments at Ft, Knox
are part of a growing anti-war
movement among G.I.'s acrossthe
country. Underground papers have
sprung up om many Army bases,
and coffeehouses similar tothe one
in Muldraugh are now operating
in seven other locations, Two of
them are in the South--in Killeen,
Tex., and Columbia, S.C,
The movement at Ft. Knox
Started in early 1968, when some
G.1."s began to publish their under-
ground paper, FTA. The soldiers
say this stands for Fun, Travel &
Adventure. The paper started with
a press run of 1500; it is pub-
lished approximately monthly and
now has a distribution of over
5,000,
The anonymous G.I, statement
explained the beginning of the
movement this way: ‘‘G.I’s got
together at Ft. Knox to do some-
thing about the way they were
treated, their lack of rights and
about the war they were being
forced to fight, They decided to
build a G.I. movement that would
begin to fight for their rights, for
respect, and an end to the war,’
As support for FTA grew among
the soldiers, the statement said,

“The Army, uptight about G.L's
getting together, tried to crush
the paper,’ the statement wenton.
“They tried to find out who the
leaders were and ship them out,
They tried to stop distribution
using local police in Louisville and
they threatened guys who had the
paper on base, But G.1's fought
back and the paper kept going."’
The coffeehouse, the statement
said, is designed toprovidea place
where G.L.'s can gather and talk
freely---something they say they
can't do on the base
Referring to the current dif-
ficulties, the statement concluded:
“The G.1’s are used to fighting
and they are not about to stop
now,..The G.I.'s see that their
only real power Is in their numbers
so they continue right on building
their movement,’’

l. Black people are limited on
this base as far as entertainment
is concerned for there are no
Black cultural programs on the
television,

very very limited amount of Black

a substantial amount of Black
members, has only received three
Black bands in the last fifteen
months

There are two other significant
events: the trip of Américo Thomiaz
and the departure of the governor.
The fact that Américo Thomaz was
able to make only a very hurried
visit to some cities, travelling by
airplane, and on the other hand the
departure of the governor who was
in Guinea, should be a source of
embarrassment to them. It’s true
that the governor had completed his
term of office. But — what general
who is winning the war is going to
leave, even when he has completed
his term of office? When a general
who is waging a war leaves after
completing his term of office, it is
because he is defeated.
The past year was really one
filled with victories, although I
don't want to say that we haven't
suffered reverses; that is normal in
any war. We attacked all the urban
centers in our land, except Bissau
— if we don’t count the attack on
the airport. Important centers such
as Bafata, Gabi, Farim, Mansoa,
Cansumbé, and lama were at-
tacked several] times; we captured
a certain number of prisoners;
there were various deserters; and
we destroyed a greater number of
Portuguese boats than ever before.
The balance of our operations,
from the 16th of April to the 15th of
November of last year, is the fol-
lowing: 251 attacks on Portuguese
fortresses, 2 attacks on aerodromes,
2 attacks on ports, 94 vehicles de-
stroyed, 30 ships sunk, 4 planes
downed, etc., and an estimate of
at least 900 enemy dead and 12
captured. It was a year of triumph
(although 1967 had been a magnifi-
cent year for us) in the political,
administrative, social, and cultural
realm and in that our armed forces
made extraordinary efforts, to the
extreme that the Portuguese were
forced to evacuate some of their
fortified posts. They had to evacu-
ate Beli, in the east; Cacocoa and
Sanchonhaé, two very important
encampments near the southern
border; in addition to nine encamp-
ments in the south and the éast of
the country. The fight has reached
a new stage of development and we
are already capable of taking the
Portuguese encampments. But we
are not hurried, we move very
calmly.
We have to be very careful, we
have to fight according to our con-
ditions, advancing with caution.

which bans third terms, there were daily fierce clashes between

that at the moment when: the Japanese people are intensifying
their struggle to get the U.S. to quit Okinawa, dictator Park is
pressuring both Japan and the U.S. to allow continuation of the
American occupation of Okinawa. And regardless of the latter’s
future status, he has offered use of Korea's Cheju Island, off the
southern coast, for a U.S. base with nuclear installations,
» Park, who had a particularly bloodthirsty career serving the
Japanese Imperial army in Manchuria—mainly trying to suppress
Korean anti-Japanese partisans—is now virtually on his knees
demanding an indefinite U.S. occupation of South Korea.
Responsible Koreans who I encountered during the first week
of a visit to the DPRK, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea,
warn that recent huge U.S, arms shipments pouring into the
‘South and the equipping of a 2 million-man “homeland defense
corps” have been accompanied by provocations ftom the South,
which are increasing tova point where a war could break out at
any moment, War could have started already if Northern forces
‘had not shown restraint in dealing with incidents in and around
the demilitarized zone,
In recent months, the Seoul regime has also stepped up training
exercises in coastal landings and mountain fighting under condi-
tions similar to the North's beaches and rugged mountains. Park's
Statement, published in the Aug. 25 U.S. News & World Report,
that there are “limits to restraint’ and that “another war more
terrible than the last"’ may be triggered, was regarded here as a
_ Serious indication of his real intentions.
One view here is that Park is multiplying provocations to tempt
a response from the North. Park would then cry “‘aggression"’ and
invoke secret clauses of Japanese-South Korean agreements to
bring Japanese troops back into South Korea on the pretext that
_ Japanese security is also endangered. To make the idea more
presentable to the Japanese public, they would be told that large
Japanese investments in South Korea are endangered,
With U.S. encouragement, Park has opened South Korea’s
doors widely to Japanese capital and there are now hundreds of
Japanese corporations, monopolies and banks active in the South.
The flow to Japan of South Korean raw materials and other
_ goods produced under slave labor conditions is reaching the
volume of the heyday of the Japanese occupation, As a faithful
servant of the Japanese for the greater part of his career, Park has
no inhibitions against offering South Korea to Japanese monopo-
lies for a start, with a future perspective of a takeover of the

If Japanese troops entered Korea and assumed the puppet

1. We want freedom. We want power to determine the destiny of our
Black Community,
We believe that black people will not be free until we are able to deter-
mine our destiny.
2. We want full employment for our people.
We believe that the federal government Is responsible and obligated to
give every man employment or a guaranteed income, We believe that if
the white American businessmen will not give full employment, then the
means of production should be taken from the businessmen and placed in
the community so that the people of the community can organize and em-
ploy all of its people and give a high standard of living
4. We want an end to the robbery by the CAPITALIST of our Black
Community
We believe that this racist government has robbed us and now we are
demanding the overdue debt of forty acres and two mules. Forty acres
and two mules was pramised 100 years ago as restitution for slave labor
and mass murder of black people. We will accept the payment in currency
which will be distributed to our many communities. The Germans are now
aiding the Jews in Israel for the genocide of the Jewish people. The Ger-
mans murdered six million Jews. The American racist has taken part in
the slaughter of over fifty million black people; therefore. we feel that this
is a modest demand that we make
4. We want decent housing, fit for shelter of human beings.
We believe that if the white landlords will not give decent housing to
our black community, then the housing and the land should be made into
cooperatives.so that our community, with government aid, can build and
make decent housing for its people
5. We want education for our people that exposes the true nature of this
decadent American society. We want education that teaches us our true
history and our role in the present-day society.
We believe in an educational system that will give to our people a knowl-
edge of self. If a man does not have knowledge of himself and his position
in society and the world, then he has little chance to relate to anything
else
6. We want all black men to be exempt from military service.
We believe that Black people should not be forced to fight in the mili-
tary service to defend a racist government that does not protect us, We
will not fight and kill other people of color in the world who, like black
people, are being victimized by the white racist government of America.
We will protect ourselves from the force and violence of the racist police
and the racist military, by whatever means necessary
7. We want an immediate end to POLICE BRUTALITY and MURDER
of black people.
We believe we can end police brutality in our black community by or-
ganizing black self-defense groups that are dedicated to defending our
black community from racist police oppression and brutality. The Second
Amendment to the Constitution of the United States gives a right to bear
arms. We therefore believe that all black people should arm themselves
for self-defense
”
8. We want freedom for all black men held in federal, state, county
and city prisons and jails.
We believe that all black people should be released from the many
jails and prisons because they have not received a fair and impartial trial.
9. We want all black people when brought to trial to be tried in court by
a jury of their peer group or people from their black communities, as
defined by the Constitution of the United States.
We believe that the courts should follow the United States Constitution
so that black people will receive fair trials. The 14th Amendment of the
U.S. Constitution gives a man a right to be tried by his peer group. A peer
is a person from a similar economic, social, religious, geographical, en-
vironmental, historical and racial background. To do this the court will be
forced to select a jury from the black community from which the black
defendant came. We have been, and are being tried by all-white juries
that have no understanding of the “average reasoning man” of the black
community
10. We want land, bread, housing, education, clothing, justice and peace.
And as our major political objective, a United Nations-supervised plebis-
cite to be held throughout the black colony in which only black colonial
subjects will be allowed to participate, for the purpose of determining the
will of black people as to their national destiny.
When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one
people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with
another, and to assume, among the powers of the earth, the separate and
equal station to which the laws of nature and naturg’s God entitle them, a
decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare
the causes which impel them to the separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal;
that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights;
that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That, to
secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their
just powers from the consent of the governed; that, whenever any form of
government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people
to alter or to abolish it, and to institute a new government, laying its
foundation on such principles, and organizing its powers in such form, as
to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness. Pru-
dence, indeed, will dictate that govern: yents long established should not
be changed for light and transient causes; and, accordingly, all experience
hath shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are
sufferable. than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they
are accustomed. But, when a long train of abuses and unsurpations, pur-
suing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under ab-
solute despotism, it is their right, itis their duty, to throw off such govern-
ment, and to provide new guards for their future security.

RULES OF THE BLACK PANTHER PARTY
CENTRAL HEADQUARTERS
OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA...
Every member of the BLACK PANTHER PARTY throughout this
country of racist Americu must abide by these rules as functional mem-
bers of this party. CENTRAL COMMITTEE members, CENTRAL
STAFFS, and LOCAL STAFFS, including all captains subordinate to
cither national, state, and local leadership of the BLACK PANTHER
PARTY will enforce these rules, Length of suspension or other dis-
ciplinary action necessary for violation of these rules will depend on
national decisions by national, state or state areca, and local committees
and staffs where said rule of rules of the BLACK PANTHER PARTY
WERE VIOLATED.
Every member of the party must know these verhatum by heart.
And apply them daily. Each member must report any violation of these
rules to their leadership or they are counter-revolutionary and are also
subjected to suspension by the BLACK PANTHER PARTY.
THE RULES ARE:
1. No party member can have marcotics or weed in his possession
while doing party work.
2. Any party member found shooting narcotics will be expelled from
this party.
3. No party member can be DRUNK while doing daily party work.
4. No party member will violate rules relating to office work, general
mectings of the BLACK PANTHER PARTY, and mectings of the
BLACK PANTHER PARTY ANYWHERE.
$. No party member will USE, POINT, or FIRE a weapon of any
kind unnecessarily or accidentally at anyone.
6. No party member can join any other army force other than the
BLACK LIBERATION ARMY.
7. No purty member can have a weapon in his possession while
DRUNK or loaded off narcotics or weed.
8. No purty member will commit any crimes against other party
members or BLACK people at all, and cannot steal or take from the
people, not even a needle or a picce of thread. ‘
9. When arcested BLACK PANTHER MEMBERS will give only
name, address, and will sign nothing. Legal first aid must be understood
by all Party members.
10. The Ten Point Program and platform of the BLACK PANTHER
PARTY must be known and understood by cach Party member.
11. Party Communications must be National and Local,
12. The 10-10-10-program should be known by all member and
also understood by all members.
13, All Finance officers will operate under the jurisdiction of the
Ministry of Finance.
14. Each person will submit a report of daily work.
15. Euch Sub-Section Louder Section Leader, Licutenant, and
Captain mut submit Daily reports of work,
16. All Panthers must learn to operate and service weapons correctly.
17. All Leadership personnel who expel a member must submit this
informution to the Editor of the Newspaper, so that it will be published
in the paper and will be known by all chapters and branches.
IK. Political Education Classes are mandatory for general member-
ship.
19. Only office personnel assigned to respective offices cach day
should be there. All Others are to sell papers and do Political work out
in the community, including Captains, Section Leaders, ete.
20, COMMUNICATIONS — all chapters must submit weekly re-
ports in writing to the National Headquarters,
21. All Branches must implement Fint Aid and/or Medical Cadres.
22. All Chapters, Branches, and components of the BLACK PAN.
THER PARTY must submit a monthly Financial Report to the Minis-
fey of Finance, and also the Central Committee.
23. Everyone in a leadership position must read no fess than two
hours per day to keep abreast of the changing political situation.
24. No chapter or branch shall ac cept rants, poverty funds, money
or any other aid from any government agency without contacting the
National Headquarters,
25. All chapters must adhere to the policy and the ideology baid
down by the CENTRAL COMMITTEE ‘of the BLACK PANTHER
PARTY.
